There are two 'Murakumo'. A red amoenum type from Japan and a variegated palmatum type from unknown source. This the variegated variety with small green leaves. In the spring, the small leaves emerge bright green with pinkish edges. As the leaf ages, small white dots appear and create a cloud-like apprearance hence the meaning "gathering of clouds". This is a small upright tree with a vase shape reaching 8 ft high and 3 ft wide in ten years. Plant in sun to part shade in well-drained soil. Zone 5. Often mispelled as 'Marakumo', 'Marakama', 'Marakuma', 'Maragumo'. It is rather frustrating but for reference in Japanese language, there is no 'gumo' or 'guma' it is always 'kumo' or 'kuma'. If not spoken clearly, it may come out with a 'g' sound making all these different names.
